CNYB Top Offensive Award: First Base

Now that the minor league season has been over for a solid two weeks,  I thought it would be a good time to hand out some hardware.  Mirroring what the MLB does with their Silver Slugger Award, we will be naming our top offensive performers at each position.  The award is given to the player based on a few offensive categories like: On Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, and Batting Average.  There were so many performances worthy, which can make this task difficult.

This is probably not the first time any of these guys picked up awards, but it is our first time giving them.

Prior to his call up to the major leagues on August 10th, Rhys Hoskins was taking the International League by storm.  In his first season at the Triple-A level, he was hitting .284 with 29 home runs and 91 RBI in 115 games.  Once on the big stage with the Philadelphia Phillies, Hoskins picked up where he left off.  After a slower start in the majors, Hoskins went on a tear and ended his first stint with the Phillies hitting .259 with 18 home runs in just 50 games.

Back with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Hoskins led the team in home runs (29), RBI (91), slugging (.581), and On Base Percentage (.385).  Most of those totals were good for or near the very top of the International League as well.  He also had a .991 fielding percentage at first base this season as well.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected Hoskins in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Cal State Sacramento.  He flew through the Phillies system making stops at almost every level.  2015 was really his breakout year playing for the Reading Fightin Phils of the Eastern League.  In 135 games, Hoskins hit 38 home runs and drove in a staggering 116 runs.

Heading into the 2017 season, Hoskins wasn’t knocking down anyone’s top prospect list.  That all certainly changed and with the re-building Phillies, we may have just seen our last of him in the minor leagues.

Congratulations to Rhys Hoskins on picking up CNY Baseball’s Top Offensive Award for First Base.
